Wimbledon: Osaka knocked out in the second round by Navarro
High fashion was combined with high drama as well as periods of high intensity
Naomi Osaka has fallen at the second hurdle at Wimbledon after being beaten in straight sets by American qualifier Emma Navarro. The Japanese star, who triumphed at the All England Club in 2019, was outplayed by the world number 106, losing 6-2, 6-3 in just 69 minutes on Court One. It is the second successive year that Osaka has failed to make it past the second round at Wimbledon, having also lost at this stage in 2021. Navarro, who is making her Wimbledon debut, will now face either Harmony Tan or Sara Sorribes Tormo in the third round. Osaka had been bidding to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time since 2018, but she was unable to match the intensity and accuracy of her opponent. The 25-year-old made a series of unforced errors in the opening set, and she was unable to recover after losing her serve in the third game. Navarro, who is 10 years younger than Osaka, continued to dominate in the second set, and she broke the Japanese star's serve twice more to seal the victory. The defeat will be a disappointment for Osaka, who has struggled for form in recent months. She has not won a tournament since the Miami Open in April 2021, and she has now lost in the second round of her last three Grand Slams. However, Osaka will have the chance to bounce back at the US Open later this summer, where she will be aiming to win her third Grand Slam title.
